The electric bass bridge, also called a bass tailpiece, anchors the strings and allows adjustment of their height and intonation. Its design, materials and adjustment options play an important role in the instrument's performance and playing feel.
From vintage bass bridges inspired by the first Fender Precision Bass and Jazz Bass models to modern high-mass models, various solutions are available to replace a worn part, restore an old bass or adapt its hardware to your preferences.
Vintage bass bridges generally feature a relatively thin metal baseplate and traditionally designed saddles. Widely used on Precision Bass and Jazz Bass style instruments, they are valued for their simplicity, light weight and classic look.
High-mass bass bridges (HiMass) feature a more substantial construction, designed to provide a rigid base and stable mechanical contact between the strings and the bass body. Depending on their design, they can alter the playing feel, attack and response of the instrument.
However, there is no universally superior solution: the choice depends on the bass, its construction and the desired result.
The number of strings is a primary criterion when choosing a tailpiece.
4-string bass bridges equip most traditional electric basses, especially models inspired by Fender Precision Bass and Jazz Bass instruments.
5-string bass bridges have an additional saddle and generally feature dimensions suited to a low B string configuration.
Some systems use individual saddles, mounted separately on the instrument body. This design allows the string spacing to be defined when building a custom bass, provided positioning and scale length requirements are respected.
A bass bridge must allow precise adjustment while ensuring reliable string retention.
Several elements deserve particular attention:
Materials: steel, brass, zinc or other alloys, depending on the bridge and saddle design.
Intonation adjustment: each saddle must be positionable to adjust string intonation.
Height adjustment: allows the string action to be adapted to the neck and playing style.
String spacing: generally expressed in millimetres, it must match the neck width and instrument configuration.
String anchoring system: strings mounted on the bridge or through the body (string-through-body) on compatible models.
Replacing an electric bass tailpiece is not limited to choosing a 4-string or 5-string model.
The mounting screw spacing, string location, baseplate dimensions and saddle adjustment range must be checked before installation.
Even on Fender style basses, dimensions may vary depending on the series, year of manufacture and maker. A bridge designed for a Jazz Bass or Precision Bass is therefore not always a direct replacement.
At ADP Guitar Parts, find a selection of electric bass bridges and tailpieces from renowned manufacturers such as Gotoh, Fender, Sandberg, Wilkinson, Schaller and Hosco.
