The Vibrola vibrato is one of the iconic accessories found on Gibson electric guitars from the 1960s. Recognizable by its elegant design and distinctive mechanism, it is fitted to certain versions of the Gibson SG, Firebird and ES-335, as well as other vintage-inspired guitars.
Unlike Stratocaster-style vibratos, the Vibrola is a vibrato tailpiece system mounted to the guitar top. It allows slight variation in string tension using an arm, creating expressive modulation and subtle vibrato effects.
Several Vibrola vibrato models have left their mark on Gibson guitar history, each with its own distinctive look and design.
The Maestro Vibrola, particularly in its long version, is closely associated with 1960s Gibson SG guitars. Its elongated metal plate and flat spring mechanism give it an instantly recognizable silhouette.
The Lyre Vibrola stands out with its decorative cover engraved with a lyre motif, an iconic feature of certain high-end SG models. It retains the flat spring vibrato principle while adding a particularly elegant finish.
The more compact Short Vibrola models offer an alternative to the traditional long tailpiece. Their format captures the spirit of historic Gibson vibratos with a different footprint.
Vibrola vibratos are especially valued for their looks and smooth response to arm movement. They are mainly suited to light, gradual vibrato effects rather than extreme pitch changes.

Installing a Vibrola vibrato tailpiece requires checking several instrument features:
Guitar model: SG, Firebird, ES or another instrument compatible with the selected system.
Tailpiece dimensions: short and long versions have different footprints and mounting points.
Mounting holes: some installations require new holes in the guitar top.
Bridge position: it must allow proper string passage and suitable vibrato operation.
Finish: chrome, nickel or gold, depending on the hardware and desired look.
A Vibrola is not necessarily a direct replacement for a traditional Stop Bar tailpiece. Compatibility and any required modifications should be considered before installation.
