Fret leveling file, Boston
The Boston Precision Tools fret leveling file is designed for leveling and dressing frets during the maintenance, setup or restoration of a guitar or bass.
When one or more frets are slightly higher than the others, they can cause fret buzz, choked notes or make it difficult to achieve a low action. Leveling gradually dresses their tops to restore a consistent height across the entire fretboard.
With its 17 cm length and 2.5 cm width, this file provides a good working surface and allows several frets to be worked on at the same time.
It is available in three grit levels, allowing you to choose the right tool for the job:
- Rough: coarse grit, for faster dressing and greater material removal.
- Medium: medium grit, versatile for routine leveling work.
- Fine: fine grit, for more gradual dressing and finishing work.
Use
Before leveling, the neck must be properly adjusted and the frets checked to identify any differences in height.
The file is then passed gradually over the fret tops to remove high spots and achieve an even surface.
After this operation, the frets will generally need to be re-crowned with a suitable fret crowning file (fret crowning file) to restore their rounded tops, then polished for a perfectly smooth playing surface.
