Gloss or satin lacquer: which one should you buy?
The choice between a gloss and a satin lacquer depends on your aesthetic preferences, but also on the style of guitar and the effect you are after:
Gloss finish
Ideal for a deep, bright mirror finish, very popular on Les Paul, Strat or Tele type guitars and on high-end acoustics. It highlights the wood grain and gives a "brand new" look.
Satin (matte) finish
More understated and contemporary, it gives a satin appearance that limits fingerprints. Perfect for modern-style instruments or natural finishes.
Tip: For a faithful vintage result or a high-end look, gloss remains the reference. For a soft feel and a discreet look, satin is an excellent choice.
How many cans do you need to lacquer a guitar?
It depends on the type of instrument and the result you want (mirror finish or "open pore"). Here are the average recommendations:
| Instrument | Sealer coat | Finishing lacquer |
| Electric guitar neck | / | 2 cans (satin or gloss) |
| Electric guitar body | 1 can | 3 cans |
| Acoustic or classical guitar | 1 can | 4 to 5 cans |
| Ukulele | / | 2 cans |
If you apply a stain between the sealer coat and the lacquer, add 1 to 2 cans of the chosen color.
